October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. At Perkies, we understand that this disease affects most Americans in some shape or form, which is why we support this cause year round. Perkies supports breast cancer research by donating 5% of every Perkies’ sale to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF).
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation’s mission is to end breast cancer by funding breast cancer research. This past year, BCRF was one of the largest donors to breast cancer and metastatic breast cancer research.
The American Cancer Society organized the first National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 1985. Since then, October has been dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer through raising money and releasing educational campaigns about prevention and early detection.
Here at Perkies, we have had the privilege to get to know two remarkable breast cancer survivors.
Alex Whitaker Cheadle was 24 when she was diagnosed with Stage I Triple Positive Breast Cancer; despite her strong support network, she felt extremely alone. Now, four years after her diagnosis and cancer free, Alex has created her own community of women dedicated to support for other young women facing breast cancer diagnoses through her blog, “Whitty’s Titty Committee,” and online clothing boutique, “Shop Petals.”
Anna Crollman was 27 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Like Alex, Anna felt alone in her battle; she found it difficult to find a group of young women who were also fighting cancer and could empathize with the obstacles she faced. She started her blog, “My Cancer Chic,” as a space to share style, beauty, wellness, and lifestyle tips to help boost the self-confidence of women facing health struggles.
These women have served as an inspiration for the spirit of Perkies as a brand as well as our products, like Perkies Petals—nipple covers that are great for women who have undergone mastectomies and reconstructive surgeries.
When you purchase a Perkies product, you are contributing to the essential work of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. It is promising that one day, this research will lead to a cure for breast cancer, so other women like Anna and Alex never have to battle the disease.
